Five for May

A Film With Me In It

A Film With Me In It

1. 48 Hours Film Competition
It’s been many years running in the main centers but the competition still grows bigger each year with more teams from smaller towns coming into the fold. 48 Hours to make a short film and hand it on DV. Tiredness. Creativity. Fatigue. Hilarity. Fun. 8 – 10 May.

2. One Day Sculpture: James Luna
James Luna will perform his postponed One Day Sculpture initially planned for April. This one will take place outside Te Papa, May 14th from 8am to 4pm. The performance will also be broadcast online. I’ve been impressed by each and every one of his photos that I’ve seen plus the fact that he’s a Native American artist has me very intrigued. Check out the Te Papa Blog for more information.

3. 2009 New Zealand International Comedy Festival
Dylan Moran: What It Is
A chance to see Bernard Black live! Yes please. Youtube should lend enough evidence to his funniness. 10th & 11th of May.
Nic Sando: Emissary
I missed his last show so I’ll be looking to catch this one at Happy from the 20th to the 23rd. “A delightful romp through the absurd and hate filled lands of the internet.” Makes sense to me, everyone loves a romp.
A Night with Beau Tyler
I haven’t experienced Beau Tyler outside of the Memphis Meltdown ads but motivational speaker inspired comedy sounds like a treat. 8th – 23rd May.

4. The Phoenix Foundation
My favourite Wellington band are playing the San Francisco Bathhouse on the 1st of May. I can’t recommend them enough. $25 is a bargain.

5. A Film With Me In It
For more Dylan Moran fun check out A Film With Me In It, a black comedy starring Dylan Moran that generated plenty of Buzz at Toronto 2008. Opens 21st of May.

Lightning Review: Monsters Vs Aliens

Monsters vs Aliens

Almost a little too childish for my taste, and my taste is pret-ty childish. However, Monsters vs Aliens swiftly pulls itself back into the worth-seeing category with a dream voice cast and great design. Aside from the overall look of the film being very pleasing, with the exception of some of the more extreme caricature, there’s retro inspiration, great animation and a fair share of eye-candy scenes that I wouldn’t feel weird about describing as “breathtaking”. When you’ve got Reese Witherspoon starring alongside Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogan, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland, Paul Rudd and Stephen Colbert there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy about the film. I saw this movie in NuVision 3D and didn’t feel even a single second of eye-strain.
